I Got An Office!

Hi everyone and welcome to September‘s monthly blog post and also the start of a new season of my content. After a fairly chilled out off-season in August I’ll also be starting this month quite slow, but it will soon ramp up with the usual stream week at the end of the month that leads straight into MCEC Season 7 and then of course GTA 6. If I’m going to take any time off it’s better to do it now because there won’t be much opportunity soon!

The biggest change and update from last month is the fact that I’m in a new location! I’ve moved out of my house and into a dedicated office and I think I've already noticed an improvement. Starting as a fun thing to do in my old bedroom 14 years ago, making YouTube videos has unexpectedly turned into a job and over time I've had to treat it as such more and more. Having a dedicated office space in my house, limiting the amount of hours I did (otherwise I'd only ever do this fun hobby that happens to also be work), and now moving out of the house completely - it's all needed for the same reason: work/life balance.

In the early days I basically had no work/life balance. My "work" was what I did in my free time as a hobby. As it began to support me more and more I would also gain more time to do it, and it ended up being the case that if I didn't limit things I'd just work nonstop. Though even if I wasn't actively at my PC making videos or streaming, I'd still be thinking about it. I could always pop up to my room to check on a rendered video or upload something. For the longest time home and work life have blended in to one.

That's been honestly incompatible with having a baby/toddler. There's too much going on in my home now for me to be able to work as effectively as I need to, and on the other side I haven't been able to give myself fully over to house activities when the next work thing I need to do is always in the back of my mind. There's always another video to render or upload or something at my PC that needs attention.

Getting this office has been a big stress, especially those early questions where I wonder whether it's an instant mistake, but I've already noticed an improvement on both work and home life. I'm much more productive when I'm in the office than I ever was at home (since baby) and I'm much happier at home when I can leave my work in the office.

And I'm not even fully set up yet. This isn't even my final form. And with things about to get busy I think it couldn't have come at a better time!
